Studying JLPT N2 kanji

N2 kanji are the vocabulary of newspapers, business and formal writing — 制度 (system), 傾向 (tendency), 対象 (target), 資源 (resources). Many differ from a near-synonym by a single character whose exact nuance you have to know.

How to approach them

  • Separate same-reading kanji that differ only in nuance (制作 vs 製作) by the sense the sentence needs.
  • Read widely — news, essays — so N2 kanji arrive in context rather than as flashcards.
  • Pay attention to word formation (〜化, 〜性, 〜的): the affix often carries the meaning.

At N2, exposure to real written Japanese matters as much as any drill.

How N2 kanji show up on the test

N2 kanji rarely appear as isolated flashcard items; they arrive inside the dense vocabulary of news, business and formal writing, and the hard questions turn on same-reading characters that differ only in nuance. This is why broad reading matters as much as any drill from N2 upward.
