Why 行く Breaks the て-form Rule (and Almost Nothing Else Does)

N5Updated 2026-08-11

Why is the て-form of 行く 行って and not 行いて?

行く is the only common Group 1 verb ending in く that takes って. Every other く-verb follows the regular pattern — 書く → 書いて, 聞く → 聞いて, 歩く → 歩いて — so learners apply the rule correctly and produce 行いて, which is wrong. The correct form is 行って.

What is the regular rule?

Group 1 (う-verbs) form the て-form by ending, not by meaning. The く row is the one that matters here.

Verb endingて-formExample
いて書く → 書いて
いで泳ぐ → 泳いで
う・つ・るって待つ → 待って
ぬ・ぶ・むんで読む → 読んで
して話す → 話して

By that table, 行く should give 行いて. It doesn't.

So what is the exception?

行く → 行って. It borrows the って ending from the う・つ・る row.

The same applies to the rarer verbs written 逝く and 往く, which are the same verb historically. Nothing else in the く row behaves this way at N5 level — and no other row has a comparable one-verb exception, which is why teachers usually introduce it as the exception rather than an exception.

Where do learners actually trip?

Not on recognising 行って — most learners have seen it hundreds of times. They trip when they produce it under time pressure in a sentence where the rule is fresh in mind. This is one of our N5 items:

みなみは学校へ___、日本語を勉強します。

Minami goes to school and studies Japanese.

The four options are 行んで / 行いて / 行きて / 行って. Three of them are what you get by applying a rule: 行いて from the く row, 行んで from the ぬ・ぶ・む row, 行きて from attaching て straight onto the ます-stem. Only 行って is right, and it is the only one you cannot derive — you have to know it.

That is worth noticing, because it tells you how to study it: not as a rule, as a word. Learn 行って the way you learned です, as a fixed shape.

Does this affect other forms?

Yes — anything built on the て-form inherits it.

FormRegular く-verb (書く)行く
て-form書いて行って
た-form (past plain)書いた行った
てから書いてから行ってから
ている書いている行っている

So a single memorised shape fixes the whole family. The た-form 行った follows the same swap, which is why 行った and 言った (from 言う) sound identical in speech and are told apart by context.

Frequently asked questions

Is 行いて ever correct?

No. 行いて is not a form of 行く in modern Japanese. If you see it, it is a learner error or a typo.

Are there other て-form exceptions at N5?

する → して and 来る → 来て are irregular verbs, so they are usually taught separately rather than as exceptions to the Group 1 table. Within Group 1, 行く is the one you need.

How do I tell 行った (went) from 言った (said)?

By context and by the particle. 行った takes a destination marked with へ or に; 言った takes what was said, usually marked with と. In speech both are いった.
