親切だし but 親切なので: Why な-Adjectives Change Shape for Every Connector

N5Updated 2026-08-11

Why is it 親切だし but 親切なので and 親切で?

The adjective is not what changes — the だ after it is. だ stays as before し and から (親切だし, 親切だから), turns into before ので (親切なので), and turns into when you are just joining two clauses (親切で). 親切て does not exist, because there is nothing for て to attach to.

What shape does each connector need?

One table covers the whole problem. Read it by column, not by row: the middle column is the one that never gives anyone trouble, and that is precisely why the other two do.

Connectorな-adjective (親切)い-adjective (安い)Noun (雨)
し (and besides)親切安いし
から (because)親切から安いからから
ので (because)親切ので安いのでので
けど (but)親切けど安いけどけど
のに (even though)親切のに安いのにのに
joining clauses親切くて

い-adjectives take the plain form straight into every connector except the last row. So a learner who has drilled 安いし・安いから・安いので walks away with the rule "attach the connector to the plain form", applies it to 親切, and produces 親切ので or 親切て. Both are wrong, and neither error comes from laziness — it comes from a rule that worked five times in a row.

What is actually changing — the adjective or the だ?

The だ. な-adjectives behave like nouns: they need a copula to finish a sentence, and it is the copula that conjugates. Once you see it that way, the six rows above collapse into three forms of one word.

Copula formAppears beforeExample
(plain)し, から, けど, ね, よ親切だし
(prenominal)ので, のに, and any noun親切なので / 親切な先生
(て-form of だ)a following clause親切で、説明も上手

The な in 親切な先生 and the な in 親切なので are the same な. ので and のに both begin with the nominaliser の, and の behaves like a noun — so the copula takes the form it always takes in front of a noun. That is not a coincidence you have to memorise; it is the same rule twice.

The で in 親切で is likewise not a particle. It is the て-form of だ, which is why nouns do exactly the same thing (雨で電車が止まった) and why い-adjectives cannot — 安い has its own て-form, 安くて, and never borrows the copula's.

What does this actually look like on a test?

This is one of our N5 items, and it is built to punish the "attach to the plain form" habit:

先生は親切だ___、せつめいも上手です。

The teacher is kind, and besides, explains things well.

The four options are て / ので / から / し. Notice that だ is already printed in the stem, so the options are not competing on meaning alone:

OptionResultVerdict
親切だてImpossible — the て-form is 親切
ので親切だのでImpossible — ので needs 親切ので
から親切だからGrammatical, but claims kindness causes good explaining
親切だしCorrect — lists two separate good points

Two of the three wrong answers are eliminated before you think about meaning. That is the useful part. If you can see what shape the connector demands, half the question answers itself and you only have to weigh から against し on sense: から asserts a cause, し stacks parallel qualities, and "kind, and also a good explainer" is a list, not a cause.

How do I stop making this mistake?

Sort connectors into three buckets and learn the bucket, not the connector.

Then run one self-check when you write: does my connector start with の? If yes, the だ must become な. That single question fixes 親切なので, 雨なので, 好きなのに and 便利なので all at once.

Frequently asked questions

Is 親切て ever correct?

No. な-adjectives have no て-form of their own. The joining form is 親切で, made from the copula, not by adding て to the adjective.

Can I say 親切ですし in polite speech?

Yes. し attaches to the polite copula too, so 先生は親切ですし、説明も上手です is natural and slightly more formal than 親切だし.

Are 親切なので and 親切だから interchangeable?

Both give a reason, and both are correct here. ので frames the reason as an objective fact and sounds softer; から states it as your own judgement and is more direct. The shape difference is fixed regardless of which you pick — な before ので, だ before から.

Do nouns really follow the same pattern as な-adjectives?

Yes, exactly the same: 雨だし, 雨なので, 雨だから, 雨で. That is the strongest argument for treating this as one copula rule instead of two adjective rules.

  1. Our dataFive items in our bank put the same four connectors — て / ので / から / し — against each other, and only two of them (q_gf_extra_shi_2 with 雨だ and q_gf_extra_shi_4 with 親切だ) place them after a visible だ, which is what makes the form constraint, rather than meaning, the deciding factor.Yatta! question bank, 14,035 items · checked 2026-08-11
  2. Our dataAcross the bank, なので appears in 45 items, だから in 97 and だし in 63 — the three shapes are drilled separately, which is how the underlying copula alternation stays invisible to learners.Yatta! question bank, 14,035 items · checked 2026-08-11
