はかる (測る・計る・量る): One Verb, Many Meanings (with Examples)

One sound, several kanji

Open a dictionary for はかる and you'll see a row of different kanji staring back: 測る, 計る, 量る, and even 図る and 諮る. It looks intimidating, but here's the comforting part — the three everyday ones all mean basically the same thing: to measure. The word is the same; only the kanji changes to tell the reader what kind of measuring is happening.

Think of はかる as one verb that swaps outfits depending on the job:

Hold the single image "find out the size of something" in your head, and the kanji becomes a label you attach based on the thing being measured — not three separate words to memorize.

One structural note before the meanings: はかる is transitive (you do it to something), and it's a Group 1 (う-)verb. That means it follows the う→って pattern: 測る → 測って, 計る → 計って, 量る → 量って. The negative is 測らない, and the polite form is 測ります.

The meanings, most common first

1. To measure length / distance / depth (測る)

ヤッタンは部屋の長さを測る。

ヤッタンは へやの ながさを はかる。

Yattan measures the length of the room.

測る covers anything you measure across space — length, width, distance, depth.

2. To measure height (測る)

先生は弟の身長を測った。

せんせいは おとうとの しんちょうを はかった。

Sensei measured little brother's height.

身長を測る = to measure (someone's) height. Same 測る, because height is a length.

3. To measure temperature (測る)

モチは熱があるので体温を測る。

モチは ねつが あるので たいおんを はかる。

Mochi has a fever, so he measures his temperature.

体温を測る = to take one's temperature. Temperature counts as a size measured on a scale, so it uses 測る.

4. To measure / count time (計る)

ヤッタンはストップウォッチで時間を計る。

ヤッタンは ストップウォッチで じかんを はかる。

Yattan measures the time with a stopwatch.

時間を計る = to time something. Anything to do with clocks and counting uses 計る.

5. To gauge timing / a chance (計る)

弟は話しかけるタイミングを計っていた。

おとうとは はなしかける タイミングを はかって いた。

Little brother was gauging the timing to speak up.

タイミングを計る = to gauge / judge the right moment. 計る also covers reading a situation, not just literal counting.

6. To measure weight (量る)

モチは毎朝、体重を量る。

モチは まいあさ、たいじゅうを はかる。

Mochi weighs himself every morning.

体重を量る = to weigh oneself. Weight and heaviness take 量る.

7. To measure weight of an object (量る)

先生は荷物の重さを量った。

せんせいは にもつの おもさを はかった。

Sensei measured the weight of the package.

重さを量る = to measure (something's) weight. Same 量る for the heaviness of any object.

8. To measure volume / capacity (量る)

ヤッタンはカップで水の量を量る。

ヤッタンは カップで みずの りょうを はかる。

Yattan measures the amount of water with a cup.

How much liquid or how much of something — volume and capacity also use 量る.

A quick rule of thumb: if a tape measure or thermometer would help, it's 測る. If a clock or counter is involved, it's 計る. If a scale or measuring cup is involved, it's 量る.

Common collocations worth memorizing

Some はかる phrases are fixed enough that the kanji choice is settled — learn the chunk and the kanji together:

CollocationReadingMeaning
距離を測るきょりを はかるto measure distance
身長を測るしんちょうを はかるto measure height
体温を測るたいおんを はかるto take one's temperature
時間を計るじかんを はかるto time / measure time
タイミングを計るタイミングを はかるto gauge the timing
体重を量るたいじゅうを はかるto weigh oneself
重さを量るおもさを はかるto measure weight

Kanji & related はかる verbs

The three workhorse kanji each own a domain:

A handy memory hook: 計 contains the radical for "speak/count" (言) and appears in 時計 (clock), so it's the time and counting one. 量 looks heavy and stacked, and it appears in 重量 (weight), so it's the weight and volume one. 測 has the water radical (氵) and shows up in 測定 (measurement) and 予測 (prediction), so it's the broad spatial measuring one.

Two more はかる verbs exist, but both are N1 — just know they're out there:

At N5–N3, focus entirely on 測る / 計る / 量る. If you're ever unsure which to write, leaving はかる in kana is completely natural and very common in casual writing — natives do it all the time precisely because the three are easy to mix up.

測る vs 計る vs 量る — which kanji?

The verb is identical; the kanji is chosen by what you measure. This is the whole game:

FormCore ideaExample
測るLength, distance, depth, speed, temperature — measured across space or on a scale距離を測る = to measure distance; 体温を測る = to take temperature
計るTime and numbers; gauging timing or a situation時間を計る = to time; タイミングを計る = to gauge the moment
量るWeight, volume, capacity — measured by mass or amount体重を量る = to weigh oneself; 水の量を量る = to measure volume

A neat way to feel it: ask "what tool would I reach for?" A ruler or thermometer points to 測る, a clock or counter points to 計る, and a scale or measuring cup points to 量る. When in doubt, write はかる in kana and you're never wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is はかる a ru-verb or u-verb?

はかる is a Group 1 (う-verb / godan) verb: はかり-ます, はかっ-て, はから-ない. The て-form follows the う→って pattern, so 測る becomes 測って.

Which kanji do I use for taking my temperature?

Use 測る — 体温を測る. Temperature is measured on a scale like length, so it takes 測る, the same kanji used for distance and height.

What is the difference between 測る, 計る, and 量る?

All three read はかる and mean 'to measure.' 測る is for length, distance, and temperature; 計る is for time and numbers; 量る is for weight and volume. The kanji changes with what you measure.

What about 図る and 諮る?

Those are different verbs also read はかる but they are N1: 図る means to plan or attempt (解決を図る), and 諮る means to consult or refer a matter to a committee. For N5–N3 you only need 測る, 計る, and 量る.
