つくる (作る): One Verb, Many Meanings (with Examples)

N5deep-diveUpdated 2026-06-24

One sound, several kanji

When you first meet つくる, the meaning feels simple — "to make." And it is! The twist comes from the kanji. The very same sound tsukuru can be written three ways, each with a slightly different flavour:

Here's the good news for an N5–N4 learner: 作る covers almost everything. You can write 料理を作る, 友達を作る, ビルを作る, and even 作品を作る, and no one will blink. The other two kanji are nuance — a way to highlight scale or originality — not different verbs you have to learn. Hold one image in your head: 作る = bring something into being, and you've got 90% of it.

One structural note before the meanings: 作る is transitive (you do it to something — you make a thing). And because it ends in る but the syllable before る is あ-sound (-ku-ru), it's a Group 1 (う-verb), not a ru-verb. That matters for conjugation: the te-form is 作って (う→って), not ×作て.

The meanings, most common first

1. To make / build (作る)

ヤッタンは紙で小さい箱を作った。

ヤッタンは かみで ちいさい はこを つくった。

Yattan made a small box out of paper.

2. To cook / prepare (a meal) (料理を作る)

モチは毎晩晩ご飯を作る。

モチは まいばん ばんごはんを つくる。

Mochi cooks dinner every night.

For cooking, 作る is the natural everyday verb — 料理を作る.

3. To make a plan / set something up (計画を作る)

ヤッタンは夏休みの計画を作った。

ヤッタンは なつやすみの けいかくを つくった。

Yattan made a plan for the summer holidays.

Abstract things like plans, rules, and schedules also use 作る.

4. To make friends (友達を作る)

ヤッタンの弟は学校で友達をたくさん作った。

ヤッタンの おとうとは がっこうで ともだちを たくさん つくった。

Yattan's little brother made lots of friends at school.

友達を作る is a fixed expression — 'to make friends.' Learn it as a chunk.

5. To grow / cultivate (野菜を作る)

先生は庭で野菜を作っている。

せんせいは にわで やさいを つくって いる。

Sensei grows vegetables in the garden.

For growing crops you can also say 育てる, but 作る is common for farm produce.

6. To create an original work (作品を作る / 創る)

ヤッタンは新しい歌を作った。

ヤッタンは あたらしい うたを つくった。

Yattan created a new song.

Songs, stories, and artworks: 作る is fine, but you may also see 創る to stress originality (N1).

7. To build big things (ビル/船を造る)

あの会社は大きい船を造っている。

あの かいしゃは おおきい ふねを つくって いる。

That company builds large ships.

For ships, factories, and big structures, the kanji 造る (N3) is often used — same sound, bigger scale.

And it keeps going, all from the same "bring it into being" image: お金を作る (to scrape together money), 時間を作る (to make time), 漢字で名前を作る (to form a name in kanji). You don't need a separate word for each — once the core image clicks, they all feel natural.

Common collocations worth memorizing

Some 作る phrases are so fixed that natives treat them as single units. Learn these as chunks:

CollocationMeaning
料理を作るto cook a meal
ご飯を作るto make food / cook
友達を作るto make friends
計画を作るto make a plan
時間を作るto make time
お金を作るto raise / scrape together money
野菜を作るto grow vegetables

Kanji & related つくる verbs

The everyday kanji is ("to make"). In casual writing つくる is often left in kana, and at your level 作る is the safe default for everything. But the same sound has two siblings you'll meet later:

Don't stress about choosing the "right" one yet. Write 作る and you'll be correct in almost every N5–N4 situation; the other two just add a shade of meaning.

作る vs 造る vs 創る — which kanji?

All three are read つくる and all mean "make." The difference is scale and originality, not the action itself:

FormCore ideaExample
作る (N5 — default)Make / cook / prepare — general, everyday things料理を作る = cook a meal; 友達を作る = make friends
造る (N3)Build / manufacture on a large, industrial scale船を造る = build a ship; 酒を造る = brew sake
創る (N1)Create something original from nothing文化を創る = create a culture; 作品を創る = create an artwork

A simple rule of thumb: if you're unsure, use 作る. Reach for 造る only when something big and physical is being manufactured, and 創る only when you want to stress that something brand-new and original is being brought into the world. At N5–N4 you will almost never need the other two — recognising them is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is つくる a ru-verb or u-verb?

作る is a Group 1 (う-verb / godan) verb. Even though it ends in る, the te-form is 作って and the negative is 作らない — it conjugates like 終わる, not like 食べる.

What is the difference between 作る, 造る, and 創る?

All three are read つくる. 作る is the everyday default (make, cook, prepare). 造る (N3) is for building or manufacturing big things like ships and buildings. 創る (N1) is for creating something original. At N5–N4, 作る covers almost everything.

Which つくる do I use for cooking?

Use 作る — 料理を作る or ご飯を作る. Cooking is everyday making, so the default kanji 作 is correct.

How do you say 'make friends' in Japanese?

友達を作る (ともだちをつくる). It's a fixed expression, so learn the three words as one chunk.
