〜に至るまで: 'All the Way To' / 'Even Down To' (Comprehensive Extent)

N1guideUpdated 2026-08-04

Emphasizing that nothing was left out

〜に至るまで caps off a list or a range and says "right down to this, inclusive." It's common with body-like enumerations (from big things to the smallest thing) and with time or process spans (from the start of something to its very end).

彼は細部に至るまで完璧を追求する。

かれは さいぶに いたるまで かんぺきを ついきゅうする。

He pursues perfection right down to the smallest detail.

細部 (details) is the extreme, exhaustive endpoint.

子供から大人に至るまで、誰もが楽しめる。

こどもから おとなに いたるまで、だれもが たのしめる。

From children all the way to adults, everyone can enjoy it.

から…に至るまで frames the full range.

やったんは、朝のあいさつから寝る前の一言に至るまで、いつも元気だ。

やったんは、あさの あいさつから ねるまえの ひとことに いたるまで、いつも げんきだ。

Yattan is upbeat about everything, from his morning greeting all the way to his last word before bed.

Form: どこから〜に至るまで

に至るまで attaches directly to a noun. It very often appears as the second half of a から〜に至るまで frame, where から marks the starting point and に至るまで marks the far end.

PatternExample
名詞 + に至るまで細部に至るまで(追求する)
名詞A + から + 名詞B + に至るまで子供から大人に至るまで
動詞(辞書形)+ に至るまで実行に至るまで(すべてが順調だった)

この計画は計画段階から実行に至るまで、すべてが順調だった。

この けいかくは けいかくだんかいから じっこうに いたるまで、すべてが じゅんちょうだった。

This project went smoothly all the way from the planning stage through execution.

Not the same as ただの「まで」

Plain まで just marks a limit or deadline — neutral, no emphasis. 〜に至るまで is reserved for written or formal speech and always carries a sense of "surprisingly comprehensive" or "leaving nothing out." Swapping in まで where に至るまで was intended flattens that nuance completely.

午後5時まで働く。

ごご ごじまで はたらく。

I work until 5 p.m.

Plain deadline, no emphasis — just まで.

彼は休日に至るまで仕事のことを考えている。

かれは きゅうじつに いたるまで しごとの ことを かんがえている。

He thinks about work even on his days off.

に至るまで signals 'even this, which you'd think would be exempt.'

More N1 grammar to explore

Keep going with related patterns at the same level:

  • 〜に至っては〜に至っては means 'as for / when it comes to,' picking out one item — usually the most extreme, worst, or most striking example — from a group already being discussed: この街に至っては深刻だ ('as for this city, it's serious').
  • 〜にまつわる〜にまつわる attaches to a noun and modifies a following noun, meaning 'related to / associated with,' almost always for stories, legends, episodes, or history tied to a person or place: 神社にまつわる伝説 ('a legend associated with the shrine').
  • 〜に則って〜に則って means 'in accordance with' or 'based on' — a formal N1 pattern used when acting according to laws, rules, standards, or established precedent, not personal opinion.
  • 〜に先駆けて〜に先駆けて means 'ahead of others' or 'as a pioneer' — a formal N1 expression for being the first to do something before competitors or peers, common in business and tech news.
  • 〜に堪える〜に堪える means something is good or strong enough to 'withstand' an action — worth watching, worthy of trust. Its negative, 〜に堪えない, is far more common and means the opposite: too poor or painful to bear.
  • 〜に足る〜に足る attaches to a noun or the dictionary form of a verb and means 'enough to,' 'worthy of,' or 'sufficient for' — the thing clears the bar a specific purpose requires. It's close to に値する but leans on adequacy rather than abstract worth.
