〜の至り: 'The Height Of...' (Meaning + Examples)
Reaching the extreme of a feeling
〜の至り follows an emotion or evaluative noun (often ending in さ or a formal noun like 光栄) to say that feeling is at its absolute peak. It's most common in formal speeches, acceptance remarks, and apologies — praising an honor or confessing deep shame.
やったんはこのような賞をいただき、光栄の至りですと頭を下げた。
やったんは このような しょうを いただき、こうえいのいたりですと あたまを さげた。
Yattan bowed and said receiving such an award was the height of honor.
光栄の至り = a set formal phrase for 'I'm deeply honored.'
ご招待いただき、幸せの至りでございます。
ごしょうたい いただき、しあわせのいたりで ございます。
Being invited like this is the height of happiness.
このような失態は恥の至りです。
このような しったいは はじのいたりです。
A blunder like this is the height of shame.
Attaching to an emotion noun
〜の至り attaches directly to a noun describing an intense emotional or evaluative state — most often 光栄 (honor), 幸せ (happiness), or 恥 (shame). It's fixed and formal, rarely used outside set phrases.
| Attaches to | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Emotion noun | 名詞 + の至り | 光栄の至り (the height of honor) |
| Emotion noun | 名詞 + の至り | 幸せの至り (the height of happiness) |
| Emotion noun | 名詞 + の至り | 恥の至り (the height of shame) |
モチにそう褒められるとは、感激の至りだ。
モチに そう ほめられるとは、かんげきのいたりだ。
To be praised like that by Mochi is the height of what moves me deeply.
Still formal even between friends when the emotion is exaggerated for effect.
Don't confuse with 〜に値する
〜に値する (あたいする, "to be worthy of") evaluates whether something deserves a certain response — 賞賛に値する ("worthy of praise"). 〜の至り doesn't evaluate worthiness; it declares that the speaker's own feeling has reached its extreme point. の至り is about the intensity of an emotion; に値する is about whether something merits that emotion.
The short version
- 〜の至り = "the height of / the utmost" — a feeling has reached its absolute extreme.
- Attaches to: an emotion/evaluative noun (光栄, 幸せ, 恥) + の至り.
- Nuance/register: formal and somewhat literary; common in speeches, acceptance remarks, and apologies.
- Don't confuse with: 〜に値する, which judges whether something deserves a response, not how intense a feeling is.
