Studying JLPT N3 kanji
N3 is the jump most learners feel. The kanji turn abstract — 経済 (economy), 政治 (politics), 関係 (relationship), 影響 (influence) — and on'yomi homophones multiply, so the meaning of the whole word, not its shape, has to guide you.
How to approach them
- Read for meaning: at N3 several kanji share a reading, so the sense of the compound decides the answer.
- Build vocabulary in families (社会, 会社, 社長) so related kanji reinforce each other.
- Keep a list of the abstract nouns you keep misreading and drill them until they're automatic.
This is the level where kanji and reading speed start to decide your overall JLPT score.
How N3 kanji show up on the test
By N3, kanji stop being a section you can cram and start shaping your reading speed: the passages are longer and the vocabulary abstract, so hesitating over a character costs you time you need for comprehension. The goal at this level is recognition that's fast and automatic, not merely accurate.
