Key expressions
- おすすめは何ですか — "What do you recommend?" おすすめ literally means "a recommendation," so this is the go-to line when you cannot read the menu. Point and combine it with これ ("this one") to order without knowing the name.
- やきとりとビールをください — "Yakitori and a beer, please." The particle と joins the two nouns into one list, and a single を marks the whole thing. See と: joining nouns for how this "and" works and where it differs from other kinds of "and."
- これをください — "This one, please." The all-purpose ordering pattern: noun + をください. It builds on the polite request form covered in 〜てください and requests.
- お会計をお願いします — "The bill, please." お会計 is the check; お願いします is the softest, most natural way to ask for it at a counter. You can also just say すみません and mime a signature.
About Fukuoka's yatai
Fukuoka has the largest concentration of yatai (屋台) in Japan — open-air stalls that set up at dusk along the Nakasu riverside and around Tenjin, seating a handful of guests on stools at a wraparound counter. Hakata is the birthplace of tonkotsu (豚骨) ramen, the rich pork-bone broth, and many yatai serve it alongside grilled yakitori and oden. Most stalls are cash only and space is tight, so if every seat is taken, the one phrase to know is 「空いていますか」 ("Is there a seat free?").
Frequently asked questions
How do I order two things at once in Japanese?
Link the nouns with と and add one を at the end: やきとりとビールをください ('yakitori and a beer, please'). You do not repeat を after each item — one を covers the whole list.
What does おすすめ mean?
おすすめ means 'a recommendation.' Ask おすすめは何ですか ('What do you recommend?') and the staff will point you to the best dish — perfect when you cannot read the menu.
How do I ask for the bill at a yatai?
Say お会計をお願いします ('The bill, please'). Since most Fukuoka yatai are cash only, have coins and small bills ready before you sit down.
