〜において: Formal 'In' / 'At' / 'Regarding' (Place, Time, Field)

Marking a formal place, time, or field

において answers "where," "when," or "in what field" in a formal register. It replaces で (location/means) or に (time/point) whenever the surrounding sentence is official, written, or abstract rather than a casual description of physical action.

オリンピックにおいて、彼は金メダルを獲得した。

オリンピックにおいて、かれは きんメダルを かくとくした。

At the Olympics, he won a gold medal.

現代社会において環境問題は深刻だ。

げんだいしゃかいにおいて かんきょうもんだいは しんこくだ。

In modern society, environmental problems are serious.

この分野において、彼が第一人者だ。

このぶんやにおいて、かれが だいいちにんしゃだ。

In this field, he is the leading expert.

Attaching it: において and における

において attaches straight to a noun before a verb or clause. When the following word is a noun, switch to the adnominal form におけるnoun.

Attaches toPatternExample
Noun + verb/clause名詞 + において会議において発表する
Noun + noun名詞 + における + 名詞職場における人間関係
Topic-marked名詞 + においては日本においては事情が違う

やったんは職場における人間関係について、もちに相談した。

やったんは しょくばにおける にんげんかんけいについて、もちに そうだんした。

Yattan consulted Mochi about relationships in the workplace.

における because 人間関係 (a noun) follows.

において vs で: formality, not meaning

The core meaning overlaps heavily with で, but the register doesn't. Use で for everyday, concrete locations and actions; switch to において for reports, speeches, statistics, and other formal writing — especially when talking about abstract fields or historical periods rather than a literal spot.

公園で遊ぶ子どもたちを見て、やったんは現代において子どもの遊び方が変わったと感じた。

こうえんで あそぶ こどもたちを みて、やったんは げんだいにおいて こどもの あそびかたが かわったと かんじた。

Watching children play in the park, Yattan felt that the way children play has changed in modern times.

公園で (casual, physical) vs 現代において (formal, abstract era).

Keep going with related patterns at the same level:

  • 〜ものなら〜ものなら follows a potential verb to mean 'if only I could' (できるものなら、やってみたい) or, with a volitional verb, to warn of dire consequences for a rash attempt.
  • 〜ようがない〜ようがない means 'there's no way to (do something)' — the means or method to do it simply doesn't exist, usually because key information or resources are missing. Neutral-to-frustrated in tone.
  • 〜を通じて〜を通じて means 'through/by means of X' (a channel or medium) or, with a time period, 'throughout X'; near-identical to を通して, but leans slightly more toward indirect channels and continuous stretches of time.
  • 〜につきにつき has two separate uses: attached to a noun of quantity it means 'per' (1ダースにつき3ドル), while attached to a reason noun in formal notices it means 'due to / because of' (本日休業につき).
  • 〜ほど〜ほど expresses degree or extent — 'to the point that,' as in 目の玉が飛び出るほど高い ('so expensive your eyes pop out'). It measures how far something goes by describing a vivid consequence or comparison.
  • 〜に比べて〜に比べて attaches to a noun and means 'compared to / in comparison with,' setting up a baseline before stating how something differs from it: 去年に比べて、今年は暑い ('compared to last year, this year is hot').
