〜にて: Formal 'At/In/By' (Meaning + Examples)
Marking place, time, or means — formally
にて replaces で to mark where or when something happens, or what it's done by, whenever the writer wants a more formal or literary tone.

パーティーの せきじょうにて、せいてきの ひとりが かれを ぶじょくした。
At the party, one of his political rivals insulted him.
にて marks the location, formal register.

にて marking means, common in business Japanese.
The classical にあらず pairing
にて also appears in a classical-flavored, near-fixed construction with にあらず ("is not," an old negation of である), producing solemn, literary statements: 人はパンのみにて生くるにあらず ("man does not live by bread alone"). This combination is rare outside quotations, speeches, and deliberately formal writing.
やったんは、遊ぶのみにて過ごす犬にあらず。よく学びよく遊ぶ犬だ。
やったんは、あそぶのみにて すごす いぬにあらず。よく まなび よく あそぶ いぬだ。
Yattan is not a dog who spends his time only playing — he's a dog who both studies well and plays well.
Original example imitating the classical にて…にあらず register for effect.
The short version
- 〜にて = formal "at / in / by" — the written equivalent of で.
- Attaches to: a noun (place, time, or means) + にて.
- Nuance/register: formal, written; common in announcements and business Japanese.
- Don't confuse with: で (identical meaning, but everyday/spoken register).
Practice it
Choose にて for formal location, time, or means where で would be too casual for the context.
___に入れるのに最もよいものを選びなさい。
人はパンのみ___生きるにあらず、と聖書に書いてある。
Where 〜にて fits

- で · N5 — The particle で marks where an action happens, the means or tool you use, the material, the cause, and the scope of a superlative. Learn each use and how で differs from に.
- 〜てください · N5 — 〜てください is the standard way to politely ask someone to do something ('please do…'). Learn the formation, the negative 〜ないでください, softer variations, and see clear examples.
More N2 grammar to explore
Keep going with related patterns at the same level:
- 〜にわたって — 〜にわたって attaches to a range of time, distance, or scope to mean 'throughout' or 'spanning' — 広い地域にわたって (throughout a wide area). It emphasizes that something continued or extended across the entire range, not just a point within it.
- 〜のももっともだ — 〜のももっともだ follows a reason to mean 'it's only natural' or 'no wonder' — 約束を破られたのだから、怒るのももっともだ (given the broken promise, it's only natural to be angry). It expresses reasoned understanding, not just sympathy.
- 〜のもとで — 〜のもとで attaches to a noun to mean 'under', 'with', or 'in the environment/authority of' — 先生のもとで学ぶ (study under a teacher). It frames an influence, guidance, or condition that something happens within.
- 〜抜きで — 〜抜きで attaches to a noun to mean 'leaving out', 'skipping', or 'without' — 冗談抜きで (joking aside, seriously). It signals that something normally present is deliberately omitted from what follows.
- 〜抜く — 抜く as a main verb means 'to pull out/extract' — 栓を抜く (pull out a stopper). Attached to a verb's ます-stem, it becomes a suffix meaning 'do all the way through despite difficulty' — 生き抜く (survive to the end), やり抜く (see it through).
- 〜おまけに — おまけに is a sentence-connecting conjunction meaning 'to make matters worse', 'on top of that', or 'what's more'. It piles a second unwelcome fact onto an already bad situation described in the previous sentence.
