In' / 'Under' (a Given Situation) — Formal

N1guideUpdated 2026-08-04

Framing a situation as the backdrop

〜にあって sets up a noun describing a situation, era, or condition, and the rest of the sentence describes what happens or how someone behaves within it. It's frequently paired with contrast — something surprising given how difficult or unusual the situation is.

Even in a difficult situation, Yattan didn't lose his composure.

にあって frames the hardship, and the clause after shows resilience despite it.

In a critical situation, sound judgment is required.

Formal, often journalistic register.

Form

〜にあって attaches directly to a noun describing a situation, time period, place, or condition.

Noun (situation/era)Noun +

Even in the present day, this tradition is still upheld at Mochi's shop.

現代にあって contrasts an old tradition against the modern era.

Plain で or において simply mark a time or place neutrally. 〜にあって is reserved for weightier, often dramatic or noteworthy circumstances — a crisis, a historical turning point, an extreme condition — and typically leads into a clause that says something remarkable happens despite or within that situation. Using it for an ordinary setting (e.g., 教室にあって for "in the classroom") sounds overblown.
