Form: what it attaches to
〜ゆえに attaches to nouns directly or with の, to な-adjective stems directly or with な, and to plain-form clauses often reinforced with が. It can also stand alone at the head of a sentence as ゆえに ("therefore").
| Base | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | N(の)ゆえに | 貧困(の)ゆえに |
| な-adjective | Na(である)がゆえに | 優秀であるがゆえに |
| い-adjective / verb | plain form + がゆえに | 若いがゆえに |
| Sentence-initial | ゆえに、〜 | ゆえに、この計画は中止となった |
やったんは正直であるがゆえに、時々損をする。
やったんは しょうじきで あるがゆえに、ときどき そんを する。
Because Yattan is honest, he sometimes loses out.
Don't confuse with ために or だけに
〜ために covers the same "because" ground but works in both formal and everyday speech, and can also mean "in order to" (purpose) — ゆえに never has a purpose reading. 〜だけに means "precisely because," but adds a sense that the result is especially fitting or striking given the cause, not a neutral formal register marker. Reach for ゆえに specifically when the tone needs to sound written, dignified, or classical.
The short version
- 〜ゆえに = "therefore / because of / due to" (formal, literary reason marker).
- Attaches to: N(の)ゆえに, な-adj(である)がゆえに, plain form + がゆえに.
- Nuance/register: formal, written/literary; rare in casual conversation.
- Don't confuse with: ために (neutral, also means "in order to") or だけに ("precisely because," implies a fitting result).
