むしろ: 'Rather / Instead' — Flipping a Preference (Meaning + Examples)

N2guideUpdated 2026-08-04

"Rather" — rejecting one thing for another

むしろ flips an expectation: instead of the obvious answer, the speaker names what they actually think is true or preferable.

貧困は家庭を破壊するよりは、むしろ団結させる。

ひんこんは かていを はかいするよりは、むしろ だんけつさせる。

Rather than destroying families, poverty, if anything, unites them.

よりは + むしろ: reject one claim, assert the opposite.

彼に金をやるくらいなら、むしろどぶに捨てた方がましだ。

かれに かねを やるくらいなら、むしろ どぶに すてた ほうが ましだ。

Rather than give him money, I'd sooner throw it in a ditch.

くらいなら + むしろ: the rejected option is framed as the lesser choice.

やったんは甘い物より、むしろしょっぱい物が好きだ。

やったんは あまいものより、むしろ しょっぱいものが すきだ。

Rather than sweets, Yattan actually prefers salty snacks.

Original example: よりmushiro flips the expected preference.

Form: adverb — pairs with よりも / くらいなら

むしろ itself doesn't conjugate; it just sits before the clause that states the real preference. What changes is the "rejected option" clause it pairs with.

PatternRoleExample
A よりも、むしろ Breject A, prefer B甘い物よりも、むしろしょっぱい物が好き
A くらいなら、むしろ BA is so bad that B (even a drastic option) is better金をやるくらいなら、むしろ捨てた方がまし
むしろ + clause (no explicit A)correct an unstated assumptionむしろ彼の思うがままにさせてやりたい

もちは反対しなかった。むしろ彼の思うがままにさせてやりたいと思っていた。

もちは はんたいしなかった。むしろ かれの おもうがままに させてやりたいと おもっていた。

Mochi didn't object. If anything, she wanted to let him do as he pleased.

むしろ without an explicit よりも clause still corrects an assumed reaction (opposition).

むしろ vs かえって: correcting an assumption vs an ironic result

むしろ is easy to mix up with かえって ("on the contrary, unexpectedly"), but they answer different questions. むしろ corrects a preference or judgment ("actually, B is truer/better than A"). かえって describes an ironic outcome — an action backfiring into the opposite of its intended result, like 薬を飲んだら、かえって具合が悪くなった ("the medicine actually made things worse").
