〜おかげで: 'Thanks To' (Positive Cause)
The link it makes
〜おかげで links a cause to a welcome, fortunate outcome, and it wraps that link in a note of thanks. It comes from お陰 ("shade / protection"), so the underlying image is "because someone or something looked out for me, this good thing happened." Because the result is positive, you'll usually find ability or success sitting at the end of the sentence: 〜できた, 〜が終わった, 〜が治った, 助かった, うまくいった.
先生のおかげで試験に合格できました。
せんせいの おかげで しけんに ごうかく できました。
Thanks to my teacher, I was able to pass the exam.
のおかげで after a noun — gratitude toward the teacher.
薬を飲んだおかげで、早く治りました。
くすりを のんだ おかげで、はやく なおりました。
Thanks to taking the medicine, I recovered quickly.
Plain past verb + おかげで.
モチが手伝ってくれたおかげで、宿題が終わった。
モチが てつだって くれた おかげで、しゅくだいが おわった。
Thanks to Mochi helping me, I finished my homework.
Tone, register, and attitude
おかげで is never neutral — it commits you to a subjective, grateful stance, and that's exactly what separates it from its neighbours. Its opposite number, せいで, assigns blame for a bad result. Compare 雨のおかげで涼しくなった ("Thanks to the rain, it cooled down" — welcome) with 雨のせいで試合が中止になった ("Because of the rain, the match was cancelled" — unwelcome). When the outcome is neutral, neither praise nor blame, drop both and use plain から or ので: 雨だから、傘を持っていく.
For a more formal, humble register there's the fixed expression おかげさまで — "thanks to you / thank you for asking" — used when reporting that things are going well, even when no specific helper is named.
おかげさまで、家族はみんな元気です。
おかげさまで、かぞくは みんな げんきです。
Thank you for asking — my family is all doing well.
Set phrase; softens and adds humility, very common in greetings.
Push the grateful frame against a clearly bad result on purpose and you get irony — the "thanks" turns sarcastic, like English "thanks a lot."
モチがうるさかったおかげで、全然眠れなかったよ。
モチが うるさかった おかげで、ぜんぜん ねむれなかったよ。
Thanks to Mochi being noisy, I couldn't sleep at all.
Clearly negative result → read as sarcasm. Use sparingly and only when the irony is obvious.
What attaches to おかげで
The connector reaches back differently depending on the word class in front of it. Verbs and い-adjectives connect in plain form; nouns and な-adjectives need a linker.
| Before おかげで | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | noun + の + おかげで | 先生のおかげで (thanks to the teacher) |
| な-adjective | な-adj + な + おかげで | 元気なおかげで (thanks to being healthy) |
| Verb | plain form + おかげで | 勉強したおかげで (thanks to studying) |
| い-adjective | plain form + おかげで | 天気がいいおかげで (thanks to the nice weather) |
Both present and past plain forms attach: 薬を飲むおかげで (general) vs 薬を飲んだおかげで (a specific past dose). For a finished, concrete result — the usual case — the past form is the natural choice.

Watch-outs
- Using おかげで for a clearly bad result (non-sarcastically). 寝坊したせいで遅刻した (✓), not 寝坊したおかげで遅刻した — unless you genuinely mean it as sarcasm.
- Forgetting の after a noun. It's 先生のおかげで, not 先生おかげで. Nouns always need の.
- Using で after な-adjectives instead of な. It's 元気なおかげで, not 元気で おかげで. な-adjectives take な.
- Reaching for おかげで for a neutral cause. If there's no gratitude or blame, plain から/ので is more natural: 時間がないから急ごう.
The short version
- おかげで = "thanks to" — a cause with a positive result and a feeling of gratitude.
- Forming: noun + のおかげで; な-adj + なおかげで; verb / い-adj in plain form + おかげで.
- おかげさまで is a polite set phrase for "things are going well, thank you."
- Contrast: おかげで (good/thanks) vs せいで (bad/blame); neutral causes → から / ので.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between おかげで and せいで?
おかげで is for a good result with gratitude ('thanks to'): 先生のおかげで合格した. せいで is for a bad result with blame ('because of'): 雨のせいで中止になった. Same 'because,' opposite attitude.
How do I connect おかげで to a noun?
Add の between the noun and おかげで: 友達のおかげで ('thanks to my friend'). な-adjectives take な instead (元気なおかげで), and verbs/い-adjectives connect in plain form.
What does おかげさまで mean?
It's a polite set phrase meaning 'thanks to you' or 'thank you for asking,' used when reporting that things are going well — e.g. おかげさまで元気です ('I'm well, thank you').
Can おかげで ever be used for something bad?
Yes, but only sarcastically, when the irony is obvious: うるさかったおかげで眠れなかった ('thanks a lot for being loud — I couldn't sleep'). For a genuine bad result, use せいで.
