〜ば〜ほど: 'The More... The More' in Japanese (N3 Grammar)

N3guideUpdated 2026-07-18

The kind of "if" it sets up

〜ば〜ほど grows straight out of the ば-conditional — but instead of a plain "if X, then Y," it draws a proportional link: as one thing rises, another rises (or falls) right along with it. That's exactly English "the more…, the more…." The mechanics are simple: you state the same word twice, once in ば-form and once in plain form followed by ほど.

日本語は勉強すればするほど面白くなる。

にほんごは べんきょうすれば するほど おもしろく なる。

The more you study Japanese, the more interesting it gets.

勉強すれば + する + ほど — the verb is repeated.

この本は読めば読むほど好きになります。

このほんは よめば よむほど すきに なります。

The more I read this book, the more I like it.

ヤッタンは練習すればするほど上手になった。

ヤッタンは れんしゅうすれば するほど じょうずに なった。

The more Yattan practiced, the better he got.

Notice the same word appears twice in each sentence. That repetition is the heart of the pattern — drop it and the sentence breaks.

Building both slots

Take the word, make the ば-form, then repeat it in plain (dictionary) form + ほど:

Word typeば-form+ plain + ほどExample
Verb (する)すればする + ほど練習すれば練習するほど
Verb (godan)読めば読む + ほど読めば読むほど
Verb (ichidan)食べれば食べる + ほど食べれば食べるほど
い-adjective安ければ安い + ほど安ければ安いほど
な-adjective便利なら(ば)便利な + ほど便利なら便利なほど
な-adj / Noun〜であればあるほど静かであればあるほど

A few notes on the table:

When it breaks

The pattern itself never changes meaning, so the failures are all mechanical — get the two slots to agree and nothing else can go wrong:

  1. Forgetting to repeat the word. This is the number-one error. It's 読め読むほど, not ×読めばほど or ×読むほど on its own. The word must appear twice.
  2. Using the wrong adjective form before ほど. い-adjectives keep their い (安いほど, not ×安ほど), and な-adjectives need (便利ほど, not ×便利ほど).
  3. Mixing up the two な-adjective patterns. Choose one: either 便利なら便利ほど or 便利であればあるほど. Don't blend them into ×便利であれば便利なほど.
  4. Mismatching the two halves. The ば-form and the plain form must be the same word: 高けれ高いほど (✓), not ×高ければ安いほど.

In use

い-adjectives are where you'll hear this pattern most — "the cheaper the better," "the sooner the better":

安ければ安いほどいいです。

やすければ やすいほど いいです。

The cheaper it is, the better.

The い-adjective 安い is repeated: 安ければ + 安い + ほど.

モチは甘いものが好きで、甘ければ甘いほど喜ぶ。

モチは あまいものが すきで、あまければ あまいほど よろこぶ。

Mochi loves sweets — the sweeter they are, the happier he is.

For な-adjectives and nouns, the 〜であればあるほど form sounds polished:

説明は簡単であればあるほど分かりやすい。

せつめいは かんたんで あれば あるほど わかりやすい。

The simpler an explanation is, the easier it is to understand.

な-adjective 簡単 → 簡単であればあるほど.

先生は、生徒が真剣なら真剣なほど熱心に教える。

せんせいは、せいとが しんけんなら しんけんなほど ねっしんに おしえる。

The more serious the students are, the more enthusiastically the teacher teaches.

Everyday な-adjective pattern: 真剣なら + 真剣な + ほど.

Set against the neighbouring ほど

The same ほど that powers 〜ば〜ほど also anchors two neighboring patterns worth recognizing so you don't confuse them:

Both share the core idea of ほど = "extent/degree," which is also what powers 〜ば〜ほど.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really have to repeat the word in 〜ば〜ほど?

Yes. The pattern is ば-form + the same word in plain form + ほど. For example 'the more you read' is 読めば読むほど — 読む appears twice. Dropping the repetition is the most common mistake.

How do な-adjectives work with 〜ば〜ほど?

Two ways. Everyday speech uses 〜なら + 〜な + ほど (便利なら便利なほど). The polished, very common option is 〜であればあるほど (便利であればあるほど), where あるほど does the repeating.

What's the difference between ほど here and ほど in 死ぬほど?

Both come from ほど = 'extent/degree.' In 〜ば〜ほど it links two rising things ('the more… the more'). On its own, ほど marks a degree: 死ぬほど疲れた = 'tired to the point of dying.'

Can the second half decrease instead of increase?

Yes. 'The more X, the LESS Y' just uses a negative or decreasing result: 考えれば考えるほど分からなくなる = 'the more I think, the less I understand.'
