Doing Two Things at Once (Meaning + Examples)

N5guideUpdated 2026-06-17

What it means

〜ながら connects two simultaneous actions by one person: "do B while doing A." The action attached to ながら (A) is the background; the action in the main clause (B) is the main one.

I study while listening to music.

勉強する is the main action; listening is what's going on alongside it.

I ate while watching TV.

Please don't talk on the phone while walking.

Formation

Take the ます-stem (drop ます) and add ながら:

Verbます-stem〜ながら
聞く聞き聞きながら
食べる食べ食べながら
するながら

Two rules to remember

  1. Same subject. Both actions must be done by the same person. "I watch TV while my brother eats" can't use ながら — that needs 間 (あいだ) instead.
  2. The main action comes second. What you're really doing is in the main clause, after ながら. 音楽を聴きながら勉強する = "study (main) while listening (background)," not the other way around.

Which action is "main"?

Swapping the order changes the emphasis:

FormCore ideaExample
Main action = studying (listening is background)I study while listening to music
Main action = listening (studying is background)I listen to music while studying

Put the action you want to highlight after ながら.

A note on the "although" ながら

At higher levels you'll meet a second 〜ながら(も) meaning "although / despite" (残念ながら = "unfortunately"; 知っていながら = "even though [he] knew"). At N5, though, you'll almost always be using the "while doing" meaning above — just don't be surprised when the other shows up later.

Common mistakes

  1. Different subjects. ながら needs one person for both actions. For two people, use 〜間に (while…).
  2. Building it from the dictionary form. It's the ます-stem: 食べる → 食べながら (not 食べるながら).
  3. Putting the main action first. The main clause goes after ながら.

Frequently asked questions

What does 〜ながら mean?

It means doing two things at the same time — 'while doing.' The action after ながら is the main one, and both must be done by the same person.

How do I form

Take the verb's ます-stem (drop ます) and add ながら: 聞く→聞きながら, 食べる→食べながら, する→しながら.

Can ながら be used for two different people?

No — both actions must share the same subject. For two different people acting at the same time, use 〜間に (あいだに) instead.

Which action is the main one in a ながら sentence?

The one in the main clause, after ながら. 音楽を聴きながら勉強する means 'study (main) while listening to music (background).'
