〜ながら(も): 'Although / Even Though' — the Concessive ながら (Meaning + Examples)

N3guideUpdated 2026-08-04

Pointing out a contradiction between two facts

Concessive 〜ながら(も) connects two clauses about the same subject where the second one defies what the first would lead you to expect. The も is optional and adds a touch more emphasis on the contradiction.

やったんは忙しいながらも、毎日もちとの散歩を欠かさない。

やったんは いそがしいながらも、まいにち もちとの さんぽを かかさない。

Even though Yattan is busy, he never skips his daily walk with Mochi.

Concessive ながらも: busy ⟶ you'd expect he'd skip the walk, but he doesn't.

彼は忙しいながら、健康に気をつけない。

かれは いそがしいながら、けんこうに きをつけない。

Even though he's busy, he doesn't look after his health.

Two facts about the same person that don't fit the usual expectation.

今回は行きたいながら、参加できません。

こんかいは いきたいながら、さんかできません。

Even though I want to go this time, I can't take part.

Form: verb/adjective stem + ながら(も)

Attaches toPatternExample
Verb (ます-stem)ます-stem + ながら(も)知りながら(も)(although knowing)
い-adjectiveい-adj + ながら(も)忙しいながら(も)
な-adjective / nounな-adj/noun + ながら(も)残念ながら (unfortunately — a fixed phrase)

もちは、モチベーションが上がらないと知りながらも、試験勉強を続けた。

もちは、モチベーションが あがらないと しりながらも、しけんべんきょうを つづけた。

Even knowing her motivation wouldn't rise, Mochi kept up with her exam studies.

知りながら(も): 'even though knowing' — a very common set phrase.

Concessive ながら vs. simultaneous ながら

The exact same word does double duty, so context is what separates them. Simultaneous ながら links two actions the same subject does at once: 音楽を聞きながら勉強する ("study while listening to music"). Concessive ながら links two facts that clash: 忙しいながら、休まない ("even though busy, doesn't rest"). If the two halves describe simultaneous actions, it's "while"; if the second half contradicts what the first implies, it's "although."

The short version

Practice it

Choose ながら where it marks a contradiction ('although'), not simultaneous actions ('while').

  • 〜ながら · N5〜ながら describes doing two actions at the same time ('while doing'). Learn the formation from the ます-stem, which action is the main one, and see clear examples.

More N3 grammar to explore

Keep going with related patterns at the same level:

  • 〜によると/によればによると and によれば both mean 'according to,' citing the source of information a sentence is based on (天気予報によると、明日は雨だそうだ). The sentence almost always ends in a hearsay form like そうだ or らしい.
  • 〜たらいい〜たらいい attaches to the た-form of a verb to mean 'it would be good/nice if,' 'I wish,' or (as a question) 'what should I do' — もっと時間があったらいいのに ('I wish there were more time'). It softly expresses a hope or asks for advice.
  • 〜てもかまわない〜てもかまわない attaches to the て-form to grant permission or express indifference — ここで吸ってもかまいません ('it's fine to smoke here'). Slightly more formal than 〜てもいい, and literally says 'even if..., it doesn't bother me.'
  • 〜としたら〜としたら means 'if we suppose/assume that...' — it sets up a hypothetical premise and asks what follows from it. Common with もし and questions about what you'd do in that case.
  • なぜならなぜなら(ば) and なぜかというと state the reason for a previous sentence in a fresh sentence that closes with 〜からだ. Learn the pattern, register, and how it differs from から/ので.
  • 〜によって〜によって is a versatile N3 pattern: means/method, 'varies depending on,' formal cause, and the agent in passive sentences. Learn all four senses plus による and によっては.
