〜てもかまわない: 'It's Fine Even If...' (Meaning + Examples)

N3guideUpdated 2026-08-04

Granting permission, or shrugging it off

〜てもかまわない says an action is fine to do, or that the speaker has no objection to a situation — used both to give permission and to answer "would it be a problem if...?" questions.

ここでタバコを吸ってもかまいません。

ここで たばこを すっても かまいません。

It's fine if you smoke here.

吸って (smoke, て-form) + もかまいません — granting permission.

やったんは「少し遅れてもかまわないよ」ともちに言った。

やったんは「すこし おくれても かまわないよ」と もちに いった。

Yattan told Mochi, 'It's fine even if you're a little late.'

Original example: reassuring a friend it's no problem.

A: ここに座ってもかまいませんか。B: ええ、かまいませんよ。

A: ここに すわっても かまいませんか。B: ええ、かまいませんよ。

A: Would it be alright if I sat here? B: Sure, no problem.

Form: て-form + もかまわない

もかまわない attaches after て/で of a verb, or くて/で of an adjective — the same connector pattern as 〜てもいい.

Word typeて-form+ もかまわない
Verb (吸う)吸って吸ってもかまわない
い-adjective (安い)安くて安くてもかまわない (fine even if it's cheap)
な-adjective/noun (静か)静かで静かでもかまわない (fine even if it's quiet)

値段は少し高くてもかまわない、質のいいものが欲しい。

ねだんは すこし たかくても かまわない、しつの いい ものが ほしい。

I don't mind if the price is a bit high — I want something good quality.

A slightly more formal 〜てもいい

〜てもかまわない and 〜てもいい both grant permission, and in casual talk they're often interchangeable. The difference is tone: てもいい is the everyday default, while てもかまわない sounds a bit more formal or considerate — it explicitly signals "I personally have no objection," which is why it's common in polite offers and formal announcements (ご自由にお使いいただいてもかまいません).

The short version

Practice it

Choose てもかまわない when the sentence grants permission or shows the speaker doesn't mind.
