〜としたら: 'Supposing That...' (Meaning + Examples)

N3guideUpdated 2026-08-04

Setting up a hypothesis

〜としたら takes a clause — often already hypothetical — and treats it as a premise, then asks or states what follows. It frequently appears with もし ("if") for emphasis.

もしやったんが宝くじに当たったとしたら、何を買うだろう。

もし やったんが たからくじに あたったとしたら、なにを かうだろう。

Supposing Yattan won the lottery, what would he buy, I wonder.

もし…としたら frames a purely hypothetical scenario.

彼が嘘をついているとしたら、どうしますか。

かれが うそをついているとしたら、どうしますか。

If it turns out he's lying, what will you do?

Treats a suspicion as an assumed premise, then asks for a response.

モチが本当のことを知っているとしたら、教えてくれるはずだ。

モチが ほんとうのことを しっているとしたら、おしえてくれるはずだ。

If we assume Mochi knows the truth, he should tell us.

としたら + はず: reasoning forward from an assumption.

What it attaches to

〜としたら follows the plain form of verbs and adjectives, and nouns/な-adjectives + だ.

Attaches toPatternExample
Verb (plain, past or non-past)動詞普通形 + としたら降るとしたら (supposing it rains)
い-adjective形容詞 + としたら高いとしたら (supposing it's expensive)
な-adjective/noun〜だ + としたら本当だとしたら (supposing it's true)

明日雨が降るとしたら、試合は中止になるだろう。

あした あめが ふるとしたら、しあいは ちゅうしになるだろう。

If we suppose it rains tomorrow, the match will probably be canceled.

Don't confuse with 〜たら (plain conditional)

Plain 〜たら states a real or likely condition-and-result: 雨が降ったら、傘をさす (if it rains, I'll use an umbrella) — an ordinary, expected scenario. 〜としたら explicitly frames the clause as an assumption you're choosing to make, often about something uncertain, unlikely, or already stated by someone else, and is almost always followed by a question or judgment about the consequence rather than a simple next action.
