〜について: 'About' / 'Concerning' (Meaning + Examples)
The topic you're talking about
について marks the topic or subject of an action — what you are talking, thinking, reading, or writing about. It attaches directly to a noun, with no particle in between, and its nuance is simply "with X as the topic":
ヤッタンは日本の文化について話しました。
ヤッタンは にほんの ぶんかに ついて はなしました。
Yattan talked about Japanese culture.
この問題について、みんなで考えましょう。
この もんだいに ついて、みんなで かんがえましょう。
Let's all think about this problem together.
先生は地震について詳しく説明しました。
せんせいは じしんに ついて くわしく せつめいしました。
The teacher explained in detail about the earthquake.
について often pairs with verbs of speaking, thinking, and explaining.
Note that it points at subject matter, not physical position — について never means "on top of."
Putting について in front of a noun
The base pattern is noun + について before a verb. But the moment a noun follows instead, you have to graft on の and switch to についての. Here are the four shapes you'll meet most:
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + について | before a verb (about / concerning) | 環境について話す |
| Noun + についての + 名詞 | before a noun (a … about) | 環境についての本 |
| Noun + についても | also about / even about | それについても考える |
| Noun + については | as for / regarding (with contrast) | お金については心配ない |
The examples below show the noun-modifying についての and the topic-marking については in action:
モチは環境についての本を読んでいます。
モチは かんきょうに ついての ほんを よんで います。
Mochi is reading a book about the environment.
についての links to the noun 本.
弟は将来の夢について作文を書きました。
おとうとは しょうらいの ゆめに ついて さくぶんを かきました。
My little brother wrote an essay about his future dream.
その件については、明日また話しましょう。
その けんに ついては、あした また はなしましょう。
As for that matter, let's talk again tomorrow.
についても / については add 'also' or 'as for' nuance.
Formal に関して and casual の話 / のこと
Both について and に関して mean "about / regarding," and in most sentences they are interchangeable. The difference is register:
- について — neutral. Common in everyday speech, essays, and presentations alike.
- に関して (にかんして) — more formal and stiff; favored in written reports, business, and academic contexts. 環境問題に関して調査する ("conduct research regarding environmental issues").
In casual conversation, many speakers simply use の話 (のはなし) or のこと instead: その話はやめよう ("let's drop that topic"); あなたのことを考えていた ("I was thinking about you"). These are warmer and less topic-heading-like than について — and reaching for について among friends can make you sound like you're giving a presentation.
Where learners slip
- Using を instead of について. "Talk about culture" is 文化について話す, not ×文化を話す. The verb 話す with を means "speak (a language)," e.g. 日本語を話す ("speak Japanese") — a different meaning entirely.
- Putting について directly before a noun. Use についての to modify a noun: 文化についての本 (✓), not ×文化について本. Reserve plain について for when a verb follows.
- Confusing it with location について. This grammar is about a topic, not position. "There's a cup on the desk" uses 机の上に, never について.
- Over-formalizing casual talk. In chatty speech, について can sound like a presentation. Prefer の話 or のこと with friends: 旅行の話しようよ ("let's talk about the trip").
The essentials
- について = "about / concerning / regarding," attached to a noun, marking the topic.
- Before a verb → について; before a noun → についての.
- についても = "also about"; については = "as for / regarding" (with contrast).
- に関して is the more formal twin; の話 / のこと are the casual everyday options.
Practice it
Choose the correct use of について / についての.
___に入れるのに最もよいものを選びなさい。
それ___は知る由もなかった。
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between について and に関して?
Both mean 'about / regarding.' について is neutral and works everywhere; に関して (にかんして) is more formal and is preferred in written reports, business, and academic writing. In most sentences they are interchangeable.
When do I use についての instead of について?
Use についての when a noun follows, because it modifies that noun: 環境についての本 ('a book about the environment'). Use plain について when a verb follows: 環境について話す.
Why can't I say 文化を話す for 'talk about culture'?
話す with を means 'speak (a language),' as in 日本語を話す. To mark a topic of discussion you need について: 文化について話す.
What's a more casual way to say について?
In conversation, 〜の話 or 〜のこと sound more natural: その話はやめよう ('let's drop that topic'), あなたのことを考えていた ('I was thinking about you'). について can feel like a presentation among friends.
